I don't have any examples quite as old as the 6th Century BC, Colin. I can say that 25+ years ago I executed a superb, multi-part book series for Sperry Defense Systems. It worked very well, not least because it offered a way to overcome the challenge of getting messaging objects into the hands of US Armed Forces SPOs (System Program Officers).

The series, which included a coffee-table book on antique scientific instruments and another on the life of Elmer Sperry (Johns Hopkins Press, I still have a copy) was sent to prospects - but each book was labeled as a contribution to their unit libraries.

Strong, measurable impact, lots of thank-you notes...and easy on the selling messages. As you've pointed out, still a great idea.
